21 March is the International Day of Forests, an ideal opportunity to look back on the reforestation actions carried out by CAA, the leading insurer of forests. Since 2018, we have helped to plant or protect over 2.6 million trees. This year, our actions are continuing. Our goal is to plant four million trees by 2025.
Tree protection: what does it entail?
Tree protection or “assisted natural regeneration” combines forest maintenance activities with respecting the natural reproduction cycle. This method enables the restoration and strengthening of our forests when their health declines. It involves the protection of trees.
Choosing between assisted natural regeneration (ANR) and the planting of nursery-grown trees depends on the characteristics of forest plots. To carry out ANR, the plot must be capable of regenerating itself naturally. New species sometimes need to be introduced into certain forests in order to help them adapt to climate change or cope with drought and disease. Planting is therefore necessary in such cases. In other cases, it is possible to combine assisted natural regeneration with the planting of diverse species. These are two complementary practices.
CAA is planting trees with Reforest’Action
Since 2019, CAA has been supporting Reforest’Action, which promotes the reforestation of French forests through tree-planting or assisted natural regeneration projects. For each eligible life insurance or death cover policy signed, a tree is planted or protected. Customers can choose the French forest in which they would like to plant their tree on the Reforest’Action website
and through “Planting for the Future”
Since 2018, Crédit Agricole Assurances has also been involved with the “Planting for the Future” (“Plantons pour l’Avenir”) endowment fund. This fund accelerates reforestation in France by providing the cash resources required for planting projects.
